Samantha says she loved him and didn't want to be the cause of that. At the time, Julius was the reigning NBA MVP as a Philadelphia 76er, the good Doctor, and a paternity scandal - much less an interracial affair - could have been an image- and endorsement-killer. In fact, the terse agreement between the two parties, drawn up by lawyers, was for Samantha to live at least 200 miles away from Julius, keep the birth out of the news, receive a modest monthly stipend and have sole custody. So there was little hope of Julius ever flying Alexandra in for a visit. In 1977, two years before her affair with Erving, Samantha had ghost-written a piece with Turquoise about life as an NBA wife for the New York Times, and, naturally, Turquoise felt betrayed. From all accounts, Erving's wife, Turquoise, was fuming over her husband's infidelities and livid at Samantha. But there it was, as plain as day, under father of child: Julius Winfield Erving II. The baby's full name was Alexandra Winfield Stevenson and, if Samantha had foreseen the drama ahead, she might have omitted his name from the birth certificate. She was absolutely gorgeous, and smart, I believe a Georgetown grad.Working as a sportswriter, Samantha Stevenson first met Julius Erving in the late 1970s. And why Ewing ever cheated on or divorced this woman I ll never know. We had a reading once at a bookstore half-owned by Patrick Ewing’s first wife. The Starks book was my first book, I later went on to write the Walt Frazier and of course the Vince Spadea books, so I told him I didn’t think it would be such a good career move to write the book with the Ex Mrs. J was (he did have Alexandra Stevenson out of wedlock after all). J’s wife or estranged wife wants to see if I’ll write a book with her about what an adulterer Dr. And a guy comes up to me who I don’t even know and says that Dr. I m at Mickey Mantle’s with John Starks, the defunct Mickey Mantle s Restaurant, used to be on Central Park South, and we re having our book celebration, the book that came out late because it was pulled when John didn’t read the galleys I gave him and then when he did read the book, he was pissed about some of the things said in the book. She has been forgotten by most but not by who salutes the remarkable career of Alexandra Stevenson. You have to admire the dedication and perseverance of Alexandra Stevenson for still working hard and competing at the professional level of tennis. And this week she’s in the qualies of Rancho Santa Fe – where she won her first rounder 60 60 against Morgan McCray. Last week in Surprise, Arizona, Stevenson lost in the third round of qualies to Alexandra Wozniak of Canada. This year, at age 35, Stevenson is still battling and has played two tournaments. Though her WTA singles ranking is at 546, Stevenson won’t shut it down. Stevenson actually played 20 ITF tournaments last year in places like Alabama, California, Louisiana, Las Vegas, Pennsylvania, Winnipeg, Toronto, Washington state, Albuquerque, South & North Carolina, and Virginia. A combination of injuries, errors, inconsistency and probably the new waves of quicker more athletic players stunted Stevenson’s career rise but guess what? The daughter of Julius Erving is still out there playing professional tennis. The big serving Californian reached the semifinals of Wimbledon way back in 1999 and a career high ranking of 18 in 2002. You remember Alexandra Stevenson because everybody remembers Alexandra Stevenson.
